Mayday concert Part 3b

We went to MAYDAY CONCERT IN LA πŸ˜€ The reason for our LA trip, is this concert!

mayday

The concert venue was filled with asians – all kinds. They are mostly college students – very young. haha.. That’s when BH and I felt that we had aged ALOT.

Mayday bought back many nice memories for us. When we were dating, BH would play the guitar and i would sing along.. then we will record our singing sessions. haha.. it was really silly but very fun! I had gone to several Mayday concerts ( mostly with my sis in Singapore and HK) BUT it’s our first Mayday concert together! I still think that going to a concert is a waste of money.. haha.. if it’s not to accompany someone, I don’t think I’ll go – I can just listen to them on youtube right?!

Anyway, the concert usually have a storyline. This time round, they had Jerry Yan to be one of the characters in the short ‘movie’ wow! I like Jerry yan!! It was sooooo fated! hehehe… we had good seats too- front seats at the balcony with nobody obstructing our views!

We enjoyed the concert but felt abit lost .. haha. need my sis to explain their inside jokes. The songs they sang this time round were more emo and slow , not the fast& jumping type. I was feeling sad about an incident that happened to our friend – I guess, the songs kind of catered to my feelings

oh.. they also had a guest appearance – It was Rene Liu! so nice to hear her sing after soooo long

mayday1

We bought the light sticks for US$8 each. Expensive… BUT the colours of the light sticks are centrally controlled – you will see a sea of blue or red or green at the same time! WOW!! Super cool!

Concert ended without much encore :/ It was still a good feeling to listen to chinese music in a western country πŸ™‚

Our concert tix came with free CD!! Super precious – hard to buy chinese CD here… hahaha.. BH had been listening to it in the car..

Endless blue skies Part 3a

Weather in LA is pretty good… everyday is warm and blue.. beautiful!

Started the day with brunch at the original Farmer’s Market When I visited this place years ago, I saw ” Singapore’s Banana Leaf ” , so i told myself that if I ever go back again, I will try it

fm1

erm… turns out that the food is not very authentic. I am not saying that I am a good cook BUT I think i can cook better

fm2

BH’s Mee goreng tasted so much better. I feel that the Beef Rendang is lacking of something – just not there. The beef was tender though. I can’t bring myself to finish the bad food .. eeks!

Walked around the market….

fm3

Next, we headed to Getty Museum Parking is US$15 but entry + tram ride is FREE. In my opinion, this is the 2nd best almost free attraction in LA

The place is simply beautiful.. great view of LA here!

getty1

getty2

First thing we wondered… “why is the boy catching the frog naked?!” haha..

There’s also an outdoor garden! We saw super trees! It really reminds me of Singapore’s Garden By the Bay

getty3

As usual, the view was soooo good that we hang around outdoors taking pictures. We did go inside the museum, it is HUGE. We only walked a few galleries and got to leave… FYI, museum guide (the ipod around my neck) is free, however, they run out of earpiece so it was kinda useless

getty4

I have no idea why time flies so fast in LA. I think we just spend alot of time being stuck in traffic :/

After Getty, we had In-N-Out burger (something which most friends told us to try when we r in LA – I have no idea y)

in n out

Ok.. the food is relatively cheap ( but super sinful) The milkshake was super good! phew.. luckily I don’t stay in LA, if not… i will be drinking it ALOT! The interesting thing is.. you can personalise the fries (soft, normal, well done) I like mine normal. BH like it well-done, which I find that it’s super dry.

We had to gobble up our dinner… FAST… as the next stop is……MAYDAY CONCERT!!! Will blog about it in another post πŸ˜€

Fried Carrot (Radish) Cake

Eating this dish in Singapore is soooo ez. Just go to any hawker centre or food court and you can order this dish.Β  However, this dish is not available over here. If you want to eat it, you got to make it. Well, maybe it’s healthier? You can control the ingredients and you know how you prepare it.

Actually, I had made this several times with Jo and we really like it Reminds us of home πŸ™‚ We usally prep early in the morning and cook in the evening. Since, I am doing this alone…I like to take things slow. I made the ‘radish kueh’ on 1 day and fried them the next day.

Fried Radish Cake (菜倴粿) Recipe

(Taken from RasaMalaysia)

Ingredients:

Part 1 – Making the Radish Cake

1 medium radish (about 700g when grated) + 50ml water [ I used 750g of radish – yields about 540g of grated radish]
200g rice flour [156g rice flour]
250ml water [195ml water]
1/4 tsp salt

Method:

1. Over a very low flame, steam grated radish + 50ml water in a thick stainless steel pot (or non-stick pot). About 30 mins, or until radish turns translucent. Remove cover and allow to cool. [I drain most of the water from the radish before combing with flour mixture. You don’t see a big difference between steam/ not steam radish… hmmm.. but it will feel softer]

IMG_8153

2. Combine rice flour, salt and water. Mix well to combine.

3. Add rice flour solution to cooled grated radish. Stir and mix before pouring into a metal cake tin for steaming. The final mixture should resemble a somewhat watery coleslaw.

4. Steam on high for 40 mins. Leave it until completely cool (best overnight in the refrigerator), so that the radish cake firms up. It will be easier to handle too, as it will not stick to the knife when you’re cutting.

IMG_8165

Part 2 – Frying the Radish Cake

I used 3/4 ofΒ  steamed radish cake above ,enough for 2

1 to 2 tbsp chai poh (preserved radish/turnip) [DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH, will make the dish very salty]
2 to 3 eggs, lightly beaten
3 cloves minced garlic
About 2 tsp fish sauce* (or slightly more, if you like)
3 tbsp oil (vegetable oil or lard oil)
Dash of white pepper
Chilli sauce (optional, as much as you like)
About 1 tbsp Rose Brand Thick Sweet Sauce (omit this if you are frying the white version)
3 stalks chopped spring onion
Coriander leaves for garnishing

Method:

1. Cut up steamed radish cake into small chunks. Smaller chunks will crisp better, and the result is a more delicious plate of Chai Tow Kway. You want a contrast in texture – a crisp exterior and a soft interior. And those really small, charred, crispy crumbs? Heaven.

2. In a non-stick skillet, heat oil and fry radish cake chunks till lightly browned and slightly crisp. Heat should be medium high.

3. Add minced garlic and chai poh. Fry till aromatic. Drizzle a little more oil if it is too dry.

4. Add fish sauce, pepper (and lashings of chilli sauce, if you like it spicy). Fry to coat evenly with seasoning.

5. Pour beaten eggs all over radish cake. Allow the eggs to set slightly before flipping over in sections. It’s OK if it starts breaking up when you flip over; you don’t need to have a perfect whole. At this stage, you can dish up and serve with spring onions if you are making the white version.

6. Drizzle Rose Brand Thick Sweet Sauce and stir fry to mix well. Dish up and sprinkle liberally with spring onions. Garnish with coriander leaves.

I placed the sambal chili at the side instead of frying them together. I also added prawns for extra flavour and crunch. Now… are you hungry yet? πŸ˜€

First cupcakes for the year!

Happiness is enjoying freshly baked cupcakes for tea πŸ™‚

20130304-140814.jpg

Cakes always makes me happy πŸ™‚ well.. this cake tasted like fruit cake BUT it’s ezier to bake.. try it! Btw, I didn’t have Cointreau or Grand Marnier to soak the cranberry/dried longan – I used Bacardi instead. Works well !

  • Some Kumquat slices, optional
  • 40ml of Cointreau or Grand Marnier

Talking to the moon Part 2b

1 Feb

As mentioned in my previous post, BH and I headed to 1 of the BEST FREE ATTRACTION IN LA : Griffith Observatory (GO)

Just when I thought that the view at Yamashiro was fabulous.. The view at Griffith took my breath away. Initially, we wanted to go to GOΒ  during the day but decided that it was silly “who would look at stars in the day?” haha

anyways, off we went. I am so glad that BH is comfortable with driving ( ok, i am a super bad driver.. i won’t want/dare to drive in LA. Traffic is bad. Drivers are fierce!) I guess.. it’s really difficult to visit GO if you don’t have transport.

Parking is free and very limited. We arrived at about 8pm ( closes at 10pm) and waited 30-45mins for a spot. it was worth every second…

The moment we stepped out of the car…Β  both of us “WOW!” It was sooooooooo beautiful! I think I can go to GO every single night (and I’m not someone who is interested in stars)…

Let the pics do the talking….

Griffith Observatory (1)Β  Griffith Observatory (3) Griffith Observatory (4) Griffith Observatory (5) Griffith Observatory (6)

No… we are not even using a professional camera! The pics just turn out very pretty. Spectacular night! Oh yes… this is the kind of place people go for dates too… haha.. ALOT of PDA here.. if you get what I mean πŸ˜€

Griffith Observatory (2)

There were volunteers with huge telescopes outside GO – We saw Jupiter for the 1st time! We also learnt more about stars/planets from them!

Griffith Observatory (7)

By the time we finish admiring the views and taking lots of pics using different modes.. it was close to 10pm!!! The observatory have many interesting exhibits and they are very informative. We didn’t get to see all of them πŸ™

so….. we decided that we should squeeze 1 more trip here (in the day) hehe… stay tuned for that entry. Super nice too!!!

It’s a hot date! Part 2a

1 Feb

Weather in LA is pretty nice.. filled with sunshine.. warm.. windy.. and does not get you sticky.. haha.. but i find it very bright.. so sunglasses were my best friend

First stop.. brunch at Blu Jam Cafe – which supposedly have the best french toast.. okok.. i felt like french toast.. haha

santa1

oh.. our rental car is a 2012 Ford Focus with sunroof!!! I mean.. we chose the cheapest and most basic rental car.. and we got such a cool car! Love it!! It’s like the first time we had such a nice&new car πŸ˜€

santa2

Food took a while to come… while waiting..clumsy BH spilled milk on me by accident!! OMG!! As it was a short trip, it didn’t occur to me to bring another pair of jeans… eeks… I kept my cool and didn’t cry over spilled milk :X The weather was soooo hot.. so my jeans dried up in no time ( just hope that i didn’t stink.. oh well…)

The food was generally alright – typical American breakfast food .. the french toast is sooooooooo sinful… i really wish i didn’t order it..

After a filling brunch.. we headed to Santa Monica Beach

santa3

It was a beautiful day to be at the beach… haha.. looks just like the magazines…

santa5

santa4

we also went to Muscle beach.. nothing much there… not even a good looking YOUNG hunk.. hahah

santa6

For dinner… we went to Yamashiro.

This is a upscale Japanese restaurant with a fabulous view.

yama1

Honestly.. come here for the view… NOT the food… and…. the only form of parking is valet (US$15) Our airbnb was around the corner, so we walked there (up and down the hill!) – it was really scenic.. gorgeous view of LA. This is the kind of place u might want to bring a date to, just to impress her… or… it’s a romantic place to propose to your gf!

yama2

The sashimi was quite fresh. My Lychee martini was VERY WATERED DOWN… no kick at all. BH loves his Moscow Mule ( actually I liked it too) – it tasted very refreshing.. My fave sushi was Black Forbidden rice – it’s not made using white sushi rice BUT the black one, hence the name. I felt that it was really unique. hmmm… This meal was very costly… oh well… once in a while – thank you BH πŸ™‚

yama3

I really wanted to try the dessert sushi! I have NEVER tried dessert sushi before. However, I was sooooo full from all the starters and sushi… so I tried my luck and requested for a 1/2 order of the dessert… and the chef obliged!!! yay!! Great service!

yama4

Dessert sushi taste great! ok.. maybe because I like mascarpone cheese.. haha… they used coconut glutinous rice for the sushi.. i felt that it was a nice fusion!

well… if u are wondering…. our night didn’t end here….. we headed to the BEST FREE ATTRACTION IN LA ( in my humble opinion) – it was sooo worth it…. click some ads and check back tml!!! so excited to blog about it! πŸ˜€

California girl for the weekend Part 1

BH just moved our site to a new server and he had been bugging me to blog. haha.. so here I am!

we went to LA! well.. it’s not my first time but it was BH’s 1st. The main reason for going to LA is for MayDay concert! I am so not a concert person however it’s really rare for a Taiwanese Rock bank to come to USΒ  for performance.. and this is BH (and my sis) fave band.. Off we went!

31 Jan

We took early flight.. so that we won’t waste any time πŸ™‚ some random sights….

random LA sights

First meal was at Craft. BH and I had been watching alot of Top Chef. Going to one of the chef/judges restaurants will be soooo cool! Craft is Tom Colicchio’s (1 of the judges) chain of restaurant. It was a nice surprise to know that this same restaurant was featured on Top Chef this season!!! hahaha…

hmmm.. i personally felt that the food was alright… I mean.. not fantastic… ok.. if u r expecting HUGE portions, go to another place. The portions here are good for 1 person, not meant for sharing.

Lucky for us, when we were in LA, it was “Dine LA” (Please don’t pronounce as Dine lar, the singlish way, which I did. The server looked weirdly at me.. hahaha)- you can get a 3 course menu for about US$28.

craft1 I had salad as my first course… and the vege were kinda yellowish… i feel disappointed that it’s not THAT fresh…

craft2

My 2nd course was quail with herbs… wanted to try quail as it had been cooked quite frequently on Top Chef. BH had Berkshire Pork with Polenta, Greens and Dates – he liked his alot and found it very flavorful

craft 3

I guess.. my favourite was dessert. It was Olive Oil ice-cream! wow…I have never tasted such before! It is actually very good (&healthy I hope) hehe…

Next… we checked out Hollywood!

hw1 hw2 hw3

We got our tickets to Jimmy Kimmel Live a few weeks before hand. BH was super thrilled to watch him LIVE! However, we were stuck in traffic… and couldn’t mk it to the line early enough…. so we didn’t get the chance to go to the studio . The most upsetting thing was we were the next 3 from the cut-off line… oh well… FYI, the celebrity for the night was Jennifer Lawrence!

hw4

Dinner was at Chick-a-fil. There’s no chick-a-fil at WA state.. so we thought of trying it… food was mediocre

hw5

It was a super long and tiring day since we starting fairly early… headed back to our Airbnb guesthouse after dinner….

To be continued! πŸ˜€

Sweet pea, apple of my eye ^.^

On Valentine’s Day, BH and I went for painting class at Palettes and Pairings

It was an amazing experience.. even better than standard fancy dinner followed by movie. Well, BH and I don’t really celebrate Vday BUT we try to create memories – I really don’t believe that everyday is like every normal day.. To me, everyday is special and exciting! πŸ™‚ FYI, I didn’t receive flowers this year.. haha.. I guess the cookies replaced it. (Note to BH: RED roses next year!!!)

My first painting experience was at the same venue. I painted with friends then.Β  BH and I actually wanted to paint together BUT we thought that it’s silly to have duplicate paintings. When we found out that there is a couples painting class, we signed up for it immediately! The cost was US$50 for both of us ( with drinks, light snacks, painting materials) We were very excited and looking forward to it!

Know what makes painting soΒ  fun and interesting? I feel that thru’ painting, you get to know someone better… haha..andΒ  the BIGGEST challenge comes when you paint together! though BH and I are “old husband, old wife”, there’s still something new we learn about each other through painting. haha.. yes..this is our FIRST painting experience together and it is also our 10th Vday! yay! How romantic! πŸ˜€

This instructor (Elizabeth) was really detailed and clear on giving instructions – She makes painting ez!

It’s so funny… BH took only painted 2 strokes on the canvas and exclaimed ” I LOVE IT!”

1

Erm… after which, he became such a perfectionist.. I mean.. for the rest of the 2.5 hrs.. he hardly or rather DID NOT put down his brush! OMG! hahaha.. we were supposed to paint 1 side each BUT we ended up helping each other. You can imagine-Β  i would paint and he would itchy hand come and touch up on my side of the painting and vice versa. yup.. so it was like this throughout the class.. hehe

2

He was extra happy with the painting.. and even thought that his background was the NICEST…

3

Which couple’s painting is the best? hehe.. u judge! Btw, we were one of the last 2 to leave the place as BH just had to perfect his painting. I am so glad that he enjoyed painting as much as I do… oh yes.. he is a MORE serious painter than me!
So we ended Vday.. happy, satisfied and tired! hahahaha.. what u thinking man!?!

Overall, it’s a great experience! Bh and I agree that we have different painting styles.. and he would come back again to paint – and to paint on his own canvas! hehe… We hope to make this Vday painting an annual event! πŸ™‚

More photos!

10th vday pic

Who stole the cookies from the cookies jar?

20130214-092607.jpg

I have a huge love for digestive biscuits! Not any random ones but the McVitie’s. these digestive cookies are precious … They are really expensive here, so I actually brought them back from SG. As you know… The last few days were really bad for me – I was sick, drowsy after taking medicine and had little appetite. My roommate aka BH took advantage of vulnerability and…… Ate my precious cookies!

I didn’t notice the missing cookies…. Until I opened my pantry.

Booooooo…. So last night.. BH came home with these…

20130214-093255.jpg

Imagine the look in my eyes??? Gleaming with joy!Super happy! If there’s one thing I totally love about BH, it’s his generosity – he sees no point in suffering if he can afford it. I.e. buying the cookies even when it’s costly! Haha.. What touched me the most is…. He bought it after work! I mean… The store is not even on the way or near his office! Haha… Though it’s a day early… It’s a great Valentine’s ay gift πŸ™‚

The walkers cookies are a bonus… How cute!! If only they made them in corgi shapes.. Hehe

20130214-093904.jpg

How are we spending vday? Well.. We are going for a painting class together!!! So exciting! I hope it turns out well… Hehehe..

Happy Valentine’s Day to all!!! My biggest wish this vday is… I hope all my current single friends (&sister) would find their mates soon!

Happy Lunar New Year!

It’s the year of the snake!! shiver.. I am horrified of snakes.. haha.. Wishing all who read this blog ζε–œε‘θ΄’! 万事如意!

Well… I caught a cold during the weekend of the lunar new year. It had been such a long time since I fell so ill. I had bad sore throat, fever, headache, runny nose – FULL package deal! As a result, we didn’t meet any friends.. neither did we celebrate by baking goodies or cooking good food. I was taking medication and resting most of the time. Fortunately, I woke up feeling much better today – slight cough BUT better overall. Thank God!

Over the weekend, while friends and family in SG went visiting.. BH and I also went to look at other apartments we can move to as our lease is coming to an end. We didn’t find anything better than our current place :/

Actually, I have got lots to blog about. We came back from LA last week and I haven’t blog about it yet… Stay tuned!
